IAS Vs IIM (MBA) Debate!!

Time and again.. this is the question which keeps trickling.. in the minds of almost every student of our country. The reasons for this are varied. Well.. i m not gonna mention all.. but would essentially try to throw light on some.. one by one..

Lemme began the first by quoting, an excerpt from our national pink dailies - The Economic Times or ET as it is popularly known.

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ MONDAY, MARCH 22, 2004 02:10:43 PM ]
MUMBAI: While one acronym symbolises power, the other symbolises pelf....

Quite true.. as said above.. IAS is the gateway to power.. whereas an MBA from IIM opens door to Dollar Salaries.. Working in Dream Companies.. and so on!

Every year.. once the placements in these Centres of Excellence gets over.. this question arises again..!! The reason.. the graduates from these institutes are offered start-up salaries which an IAS, IFS or IPS officer would make close to the end of a career spanning three decades.

This salary imbalance often lead to uncomfortable situations.. putting the student in a dilemna whether he should go for an MBA or a Career in Civil Services.. which is said to be the prestigious career since British Raj The IAS is seen as an illustrious career-path that could do wonders to one's self-esteem and could rocket the family repute as well.

I can elaborate on this much more.. but for now.. i invite you to comment on this post.. about what would you have gone in for and why if given a choice between the two!!

I 'll definitely get back to this post again soon..
Till then.. Goodbye from me!

ias or iim..
An ias officer is a pet of politicians.. an uneducated politician can hav ful control over an ias officer, esp.tranferring anywhere at his will..

ias- prestige,less pay better perks.
iim- great salary, more working hours and stress.

I asked this particular question a lot. Most of the time answer is "POWER".I can't understand what kind of power people seek.IAS are vested with power, power to change the society, to eradicate socio-economic problems. To choose any career is measured only on job satisfaction...and for me it is by being an IAS or a civil servant. This way I can serve my country directly with maximum efficiency and be satisfied.Obviously I shall get a bacon light car with a VIP status and a bodyguard.

Hi everyone..
I just want to list the pros and cons in IAS and IIM(MBA) as of my knowledge.

Pros in IAS:
1.Power,power,power
2.Prestige,challenging work in district, divisional and central levels
3.Facilities,respect ,contacts etc
4.If you move back from any service to corporate world after some years, you will be paid more than your peers.

cons in IAS:
1.less money.
2.remote working places in the begining of the career...any rural district
3.No metrolife...no multiplexes,no pizzahuts,no pubs and discos...this is the one most disliked for me
4.requires hard work and dedication to get in
5.political pressures

pros in IIM(MBA)
1.more money,luxurious life
2.Challenging work life
3.Metro life...hospitals,international schools for children,fun and entertainment
4.independent thinking and innovation

cons in IIM(MBA)
1.no power in society..may be in his/her firm.
2.No govt facilities
3.lots of working hours...of course as an IAS servant you should be promised to work 24*7

still i am in dilemma which one should i select?
I like sme gud features in IAS and some gud features in IIM(MBA).i couldnt able to decide ...
I flipped many times between these two

guys ,please post your opinions also...suggest me ASAP

i would be gr8ful to u ,if u solve my problem

I dont hav any contacts of IAS/IIM graduates..or else i could have met them and clarified my doubts

waiting for ur reply
Thanx a ton in anticipation

The ones like Anish should never come to civils!
Why?
Simply because the one in civils must be ready to sacrifice much more than that Anish is bothered about.("No metrolife...no multiplexes,no pizzahuts,no pubs and discos...this is the one most disliked for me"-Anish)

comparing IAS with IIM IS JUST A Foolishness. Its upto the individual that what he/she wants to do in their life. you just want to earn money or you want to do something for your society, where you will be decision makers of your country. One thing fore sure that in management sector, one will be focussed within one sector only, whereas in ias you may land up in different sectors, lot mny situations to tackled out there, lot many challenges. So, its a matter of choice.. power or money..

self satisfaction is the basic factor that should be considered.ias officers have to face political pressure whereas mba have to work under stress 24*7.

But it is very much easy for an IAS officer to live anywhere around the country. One thing more, money is not less for an ias officer.
so, the last chance is yours.

Yaar, there is no comparison between IAS and IIM. Look, IAS is nothing but a career indulge with most repectable in society and commendabel job. It enhence not only to you but your family get the zoom like rocket in the sky while IIM pass out is just doing a lucrative package job in tata, reliance or some other MNC.

Overall, IIM can be cracked surely with serious preparation of 6 months but for IAS its 2 years rigorous hard work and still not confirmed taht whether later would be cleared or not.

I donno y ppl think an IIM PG can't serve our nation. There are plethora of examples, where you find an IIM PGP pass out, carrying responsibilities of national importance. You cant ignore those ppl who r running their own entrepreneurship cells and serving the nation in a better way, than an ias officer can do. Here i am not discouraging the ias aspirants bt the desire to serve ones nation can be fulfilled in any of these two ways.

Well, I'm son of an IAS officer and my all friends are into MBA (IIMs & IITs)...when people talk about innovative skills involved in MBA I have a point. That can be applied in civils feild too. I have seen many IAS officers opening various schools in suburban areas, forest officers are in demand as green managers in this global warming era. End of the day I fully agree that preparations for an IAS is the most difficult aspect but if you see the pain not the gain you are the loser.Nothing can be compared to IAS or for that matter the country governance of any country is THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS JOB ONE CAN DO.If you seriously want to stand tall in this world IAS is way to go. Immense recognition, exceptional perks, decent salary and to top it all inner satisfaction. If you want to start your own business probably IAS officers (though historically they aren't oriented that way but someone has to start and it can be you)have an upper hand coz they gain huge benifits as they are in the government. I am too an indian forest service aspirant and if I carck it, doing job will not be my only life, I will certainly apply all my engineering and managerial skills in opening some kind of "green" firm or NGO to save earth from climate change. Lastly, no comparision between an IAS and an IIM. Management is a mean minded course where you have to fool your customers through lucrative offers even if they don't need it. For civils, if you are honest enough, you can do wonders coz no matter what you do, you'll never get fired and you can carry on.....

I am working in Corporate IT world and currently 29Yrs of age (7 Yrs. of Exp in IT). Every person has its own perception to it, whether IAS or IIM?
See my Thinking below:
IIM is just for selfish people who wants to earn Money for themselves and to hell with rest of the world.
IAS is reputed and powerful profession where is person can do a lot to his country.
IIM - Suppose if you are going on a road and by chance get in scuffle with any rickshaw wala or any Hawaldaar (Constable), he can just beat you up mercilessly.
IAS - People just cry to even have a handshake with you.

These are just day to day routine examples, Choice is yours.

I am from a top 5 MBA insti. Currently working for 1yr in an MNC. And I am very dissatisfied. They make you work like dog (weekends, late nights). Money is above average but not superb. There is no power. You are treated like slave (more so inside the company, at the beginning atleast). There is very less honesty, humanity. Motto is earn mone, by hook or by crook.
Now seriously thinking of leaving the job & maybe preparing for IAS..

in fact....both ias and iim require equal levels of determination....in tha case of ias the person needs to study hard by isolating himself from the world during his preparation while remaining in touch with every thing around him......while in the case of iim as well the student needs to go through tough examination procedures as well.....today as we can see the students who get even 99.9% in the cat are not selected by the iims due to various reasons.ultimately the two lines are equally demanding..in tha case of mba tha person gets huge money hile in ias it's not....

some facts:

1. It is true that IAS officers enjoy power and authority but they can do so within a constitutional framework only. Any extra costitutional power or authority enjoyed by any govt officer is against law and shameful.

2. People forget that policy formation and decision making is a collective process and it is not at all the case that IAS officers can take independent decisions.

3. Indian population at large has not been able to shed that pre-independence mentality that govt and govt officers are supreme in the society unlike western societies where entrepreneurship is valued more.

4. Point to be understood here is that a businessman establishes a business which would last for generations whereas an IAS officer derives power an authority by virtue of his position which is bound to go once he retires.

5. People who think that IAS officers can improve the society should understand that bureaucracy has only added to society problems and hsa done less to solve it. Red tapism is a shame.

6. Someone has well said 'Every politics is economics'. Bureaucracy can't alone run this country. We need visionary politicians, able administrators, good managers, good teachers, excellent sports person, fabulous actors to develop this nation. In short every indian citizen is equally responsible and not only ias officer or iim grad.

Hope this discussion is of some help. Thanks.

see 1st of all there are 2 catagories in IAS,
1)to enjoy the power ,to can make huge money ,property ,name ,fame,to make yours a classic family
2)really working for the country,on the behalf of poor people, farmers and your life will be defintely satisfy with this, ias offers you the platform from where you can really work to improve the various levels of society.the job of ias provides diversified experience of life........which is always exciting for a guy who cant settle for monotonous job ....ultimately your work directly influences the countrys future.....ahh what a life HERO of ur country.

in IIM,
TALENT , money ,luxury
but u r a big ZERO(means not that much explosure) in the society

ias definitely provides a platform to make lasting impression in society but ias officers use this platform for self improvement, society hardly benefits. Actually, by adding more ias officers, we are introducing more hurdles in the way of development. I would strongly suggest top govt posts be made open for non ias cadres thru lateral entry sceme as is the practice in USA. This would end the monopoly currently being enjoyed by ias.

The only edge IIMs got over IAS is luxurious and affluent life it renders otherwise IAS is always an better option...An important point to mull is that all of us making the choice between the two are mainly between the age group of 20-25. And at this age we have more inclination towards the glitters and shines of urban city (read some post about worry to miss pizza hut & malls etc.)..but provided we have to make choice between the two at the age of say 30-35, we could have been very decisive and may confidently voted for IAS as a better field because then u realize life is much more than making money and spending it crazily on unearthly things..(Note..any figure u earn its always insufficient..always ther is need for more)...so in long run as an IAS officer u will find your life more complete and purposeful. and its not gud to be myopic while deciding your career path as it determines your life, your achievements.

This was my view, also i would like to add both (iim n ias)being the epitome of their field, u need to have an whole-hearted approach to clear it. so dont start your prepration while you muddling between the two. take your time, decide what you really want in life..it may take months but finally u will be much more focussed and wud have 10 times better chance to clear the exam..
ALL D BEST..!! Since you guys have such big ambitions, i can say U will always excel in your life..!!

Once you do that thn u get the real feel of peace called satisfaction. Do whatever u wanna do , IAS,IIM, LLB, CCIE etc,, but u can serve nation antime

Hi guys
Seems there is some war between the guys supporting an IAS and an eunterprenuers. Alright before commenting anything I would like to say that I am a chemical engineering graduate from BITS Pilani(class 2010)(guys m not braggin please :D). I know a lot of my friends have started their own firm in bangalore and will surely be successful eunterprenuers in future. A EEE senior bagged 4th rank in UPSC and recently I friend of mine bagged Rs. 1 crore from some bank(obviously doller converted :P IIM A grad).

Coming to the point, being an IAS officer, an euterprenuer or an investment banker is purely an individuals ambition. U have to decide how u want to die(as among the above mention :D). Justifying your ambitions over others taking others names/profession is bullshit.

Well whatever u do, if u can live with it is kool. U can serve the nation by being any of the above. There is no debate over it.

Now coming to my short autobiography :P. I too wanted to become an IAS officer when I was in XIIth. I prepared for IIT JEE, ended in BITS. Now have given CAT n hopefully would fit in some IIM and then I plan to start a technology driven company. Yes Over the last 6 years, many times I thought of preparing for UPSC, eradicate corruption, fight against the corrupt politicians, remove social inequality by being an IAS oficer. But it's not so easy guys when u don't get even 10% of what an investment banker gets. At this point of time I can say I can help myself, my nation more effectively by being an eunterprenuer than being an IAS officer. This is just my case. No generalization please. If u think u can serve yourself and then nation by being an IAS officer and not an eunterprenuer, well go for it. :Respect.

"To conclude, u can do whatever u want to do(serving yourselves and nation) only if u r satisfied with your profession and do what u think is great work. There is no point fighting on threads like this and justfying 1s opinion."

PS: Chetan Bhagat an IIT/IIM grad leaves his job as an investment banker and is now writing books that is undoubtedly changing the society...Kool job!!!

hi every body............
this debate is never gonna end because it depends upon individual thinking. I am also facing the same d same dilemma but it should certainly come to an end as it is matter of our career. Taking others help will always confuse us more. So all who are facing with the same dilemma should ask themselves a question that what qualities they are having just clearing the exam will not ensure that you will become successful in that field whether it is ias or mba. So personal attributes are important. Imagine urself as an ias officer or an mba professional think in which field u can perform better ur inner self will give u the answer, then choose the career. Its the fact also that obstacles in IAS will be more u can not work according to your thinking. According to me name & fame due to person's own personality & thinking is much more than by his or her post. So decide in which career ur personality will be more groomed then opt for that.

IAS Vs IIM - Debate Conclusion!
IAS - Cabinet Secretary leads a country of 1.2 billion with $1 trillion economy.
Selfless Service
Works to make the poor rich.
Respectful
IAS is an Acronym for Power
Should have balls to take on the powerful elemets
Has temperment to be calm when hit hard for doing the right
Should be a good manager of power

IIM - Entreprenuer leading a group of comapnies
Selfish
Works to make the rich richer
Luxurious
Lots of money
Can work without balls
Needs stress managment
Should be a good manager of money

Most of the people whom I have seen preparing for IAS are always concerned about the power that this job promises.......They start preparing for IAS just because of the "Power Factor" and not because they want to bring about a change in the society....How selfish is that? I leave it for you to decide.....On similar lines, as you people say, that IIM graduates are enamored by the high pay packages which this brand name guarantees.... So the logical deduction is that both are selfish....one for power and the other one for money......But the real difference is in the intellectual capability of the two ...An IIT\NIT grad having an IIM degree will be far more intellectually capable than a IAS guy , who is an average B Sc. or a B Tech from some tier 2 college and gets into IAS after preparing for 3-5 years....

FROM : AN IIM GRADUATE

Hello there,

Recently i cracked 3 exams : SBI PO, CDS UPSC, CAT.

But my dream is different. Ofcourse it is to have a lavish life, global exposure, celebrating life, lot of white money, FAME-NAME-MONEY... but then there goes... The X-factor..The magic to change things and its called 'POWER'. And being an IAS,you have the magic wand. Well, been from military school, I do love adventures and If i make it through- I can choose 'IPS'. Or if you are too crazy about representing your country-then 'IFS', where in, you not only impact the relations of two great nations but of 1000 corporate businesses and not just 1 by being an IIM Graduate! And who says economically a bureaucrat is an average being?? I bet, to be true and practical, the packages that IIM graduate gets annually, here, if you are in the right department, its montly. + you can change the society... if you managed smartly and accurately the political/Govt support. 'RESPECT' - well well well -> The CEO myt roam in Rolls Royce but the glowing lamp on the car would always be superior! IAS would always be the first citizen. I do agree that An IIT\NIT grad having an IIM degree will be far more intellectually capable than a IAS guy , who is an average B Sc. or a B Tech from some tier 2 college and gets into IAS after preparing for 3-5 years, but his influence would be beyond the reach of former. To debate there would be many things on the list but one thing sure : IIM wins only if in the end you successfully become AMBANIs or TATAs or MITTALs or Azim Premjis and if not... well, lets end the debate!

Both are respectable jobs in their own field, but it depends from individual to individual.A lot depends on the personality of the candidate. The iim offers you more money and wealth, but there is onedrawback, they usually deal only with middle and upper strata of society. They have no connection with poor people. In a country like india where most of the people are poor(60 crore out of 120 crore) we cant keep them at bay for our self development.Of course Ias gives you more opportunity to help the needy when you become DM,Secretary or commissioner.

Mr. Vijay Kamthe.......Private sector is responsible for 3/4 th of the GDP of our country.....IAS officers have been there for ages but they can not change the shape of the country.....They can only formulate rules and policies for the corporate sector which are largely influenced by the lynchpins of the corporate sector.....But it is the people in the private sector who actually take the country forward......Only after the liberalization in 1991 , our country has seen tremendous growth and IT revolution driven by the corporate sector is responsible for that....I will give you a very simple analogy.....IAS are like the cricket administrators who formulate selection policies and rules .....but corporate are like the players who go out there in the field and bring laurels to the nation .......Now my question to you is that, who do you respect more?........Kris srikanth as a selector or sachin tendulkar as a player....I am talking about the bigger picture.....just read some books on how Indian Economy has developed over the years and you will realize who has made the real difference to the society......Corporates or the IAS....

I totally agree with you "IIM Graduate"......IAS is just an exam for which you prepare behind closed doors or at best go to a coaching institute .....it does not develop your personality or change your thought process as a human being.......On the contrary IIM is a full time course where after preparing and cracking one of the toughest aptitude exam you interact with some of the sharpest brains in the country for 2 years......You are mentored by some of the best mentors in the country.....IAS does not offer anything of that sort initially....Later there are opportunities but nothing like an IIM ....the two can not be compared.....One is a full time course and other is an exam......

Hi Prateek,,,,Loved the way you supported IIM Graduate....Most of the points which you guys have emphasized on are true and pragmatic..
But I think you guys have somewhat bragged about the 'intellectual part'...
If I take ur points that IIT-IIM-NIT grads form the intellectual covens of the 1.2bn people then why can't they devise some entrepreneural ideas to help the people who are below the BPL to get above the Poverty Line??
Why can't those 'intellectually superior ' grads find a common solution to fight the economic meltdown??
Why do Govts' have to help bankrupt companies if corporate lynchpins have formulated the world policies and influenced world economy more than Govt servants??
I just have these doubts and many more to ask from the corporates??

Well I am in NSIT (got a 3 digit AIR,Far better than most NITs)
Intelectually many IITians also give IAS so how can they be less smarter than IIT-IIM.

Infact upsc is much tougher so they can me attributed as smarter, and as far as clearing an exam is concerned, even IIT jee and CAT is prepared with slogging.

UPSC also has personality test which tests life skills.

And An IAS officer can also start businesses and be an entrepreneur... He has more power and time(which helps)

Money , i think any IAS can make more money (more than 100 times that of an I-banker) smartly...

He can at the same time have power.
And Really manouever the black money into benefit of poor.

Please share your take on this Mr. IIM Grad

Hi everyone...After reading all comments, I thought best way to conclude between both is to compare them on the basis of different needs of one’s life.

1. Money
Yeah I do agree that you can earn lot of money after doing MBA from IIM's , but thing is that after doing MBA you can get job only in Metros like Mumbai, Delhi or Bangalore and things in these Metros are much costlier than a normal A grade city.
I am living in Mumbai and according to my Statistics a normal 2BHK flat cost you around 2-3 crores in North Mumbai and you have to pay minimum 5-6 crores if you want buy it in South Mumbai.
So tell me guys if you are 3 lacs per month, then how many years will it take to buy a normal 2BHK flat in a Metro. The answer is atleast 20-25 years.
But in IAS you will get Bungalow all the time you will get a transfer.
And 50-60K is enough in a A grade city.

2. Satisfaction
If you are working in a corporate world after doing MBA, guys please forget about the satisfaction.
I have seen that people at the level of MD are not satisfied with the work.
It’s not necessary that all the time your family is in a need, you will get the leave. In corporate world only things matter are business and Client.
But on the other hand no doubt IAS life is busy too but atleast you can save the time which these MBA people will waste in Traffic jams (atleast 2 hours daily).

This are my views
Many people are reiterating that IAS can change the face of society. Please friends dont live in myth. Many IAS are those who are looting common man... Mark my words i used many, not categorically all. there are some like Khemka :).
i am claiming it. these people do
1) eat govt's money
2) they really do give shit to society, they only want to do their job. false power... neta k katputli...
3) in the name of relieving packages, or govt schemes these people spoil hard earned money of tax payer like me.
I believe in using less words..
So
Garib ko Mobile kisne diya... private sector ne.
Garib ko better life style kisne dikhai... private sector ne.

what we lack... we have all the things they have... what we lack we lack pure thinking for society... who are responsible for it..you, me, private sector or Govt decision makers......think from heart... At least ias aspirants know why this happened... I think lack of policies.
Whatever india achieved many say it will be 3rd largest economy by 30 years... It achieved because of Privaye sector... and companies like NTPC and ONGC god sake they are utility... vo bikna hi hai... kal ja ke Monopoly start kar do... Indian Chicken... aram se 1 T$ profit earner rahoge...

IAS ran so many PSUs to ground. IAS salaries come from taxes of private sector. Only people from underdeveloped states respect IAS.People from better developed states know their rights. Many IAS and IPS officers are sent to jail for misuse of power by complaint from common man in developed states. In terms of power, judges enjoy supreme power. I have seen ministers and IAS officers standing up even when a district judge comes leave alone high court or supreme court judges.
