Who am I?

The clothes which I wear are not me, the position which I hold, is not me ,the job I do,is not me & for that matter, the body that I have, even that is not me. Then what is it that makes me whoever I am?

The “I” which makes me whoever I am, is nothing of this. It is something which is housed inside this mortal body right now. Tomorrow, when the task which it has to accomplish thru’ this mortal body is over, it gives up the body & goes away. But it won’t die. Death is something which it does not know of. The “I” is beyond the birth & the death cycle. It can never die. It was present from times immemorial & it will continue to live forever. It is all pervasive, ever present. If that is the case, why should I be worried about dying? Its just that I’d give up this bunch of molecules & atoms which I am in, right now & go to a different state of consciousness where I realize that the things I held earlier, are not needed anymore.

I don’t know the reason for me being here on this earth. I also know for sure that I cannot change the whole world & make it a happier place. All I can do is to help whoever I can, to the extent I can. I’m pretty sure that God has a purpose for all of us here which is just wouldn’t know most of the times. I was thinking about my purpose in life & that I was not doing anything & leading a mechanical life. My parents told me a small thing. My mom put it in very simple terms & oversimplified things to make me understand. This is what she said. -Think that you help a boy & rescue him from the jaws of death or for that matter, just help him & nothing more. That might be the precise reason for why you were here. Maybe, at a later stage, the boy might grow up to be a leader or maybe his sons or daughters or great grand children might grow up to be leaders & change the destiny of a generation. If you sit down right now, & think that Oh, I am not doing anything for this world & I am not of any use, it would be wrong. God has a plan for you & he is using you fully to do what he wants you to do. Just let him do that. You might not understand why you are here & if your actions have any value at all. It surely has some value & that is the precise reason why you are still here. All you need to do is do your job to the best of your ability, hurt no one to the extent possible & help whoever you can.
